How Manchester prayer times are worked out

  • For Manchester itself: central Manchester, 53.479° N, 2.245° W, on UK clocks with British Summer Time.
  • Moonsighting Committee method, with Asr at the standard time: the same as muslimsaroundtheworld.org uses for the UK.
  • Short summer nights: when the sun doesn’t sink low enough, Fajr and Isha follow the Moonsighting Committee’s seasonal rule: a limit before sunrise for Fajr, and after sunset for Isha, worked out from the city’s latitude and the time of year. More on the method

Qibla direction from Manchester

  • 118° from true north, east-south-east: face north, then turn clockwise by 118°.
  • 5,025 km to Makkah along the shortest path over the Earth. The compass and how to use it

Manchester prayer times beside London and Liverpool

Manchester’s Zuhr comes eight or nine minutes after London’s. Albert Square, where these times are worked out, lies about two and a quarter degrees of longitude further west, so Zuhr begins between about 11:58, from late October to mid-November, and 13:21 in late July.

Each neighbour keeps its own minutes. Liverpool, 50 km west, is about three minutes behind Manchester, and Sheffield, across the Pennines, two to four minutes ahead. The Jummah page lists Zuhr for the coming Fridays.

Isha after eleven in a Manchester June

From about 17 to 30 June, Isha in Manchester begins at 23:00 or later. On 21 June Maghrib is at 21:45, and only about 3 hours 36 minutes separate Isha from the next Fajr.

The city’s light season outlasts the Midlands’ and London’s. From mid-May to the end of July the sun never sinks 18° below Manchester’s horizon, so the Moonsighting Committee’s seasonal limits set Fajr and Isha. Mosques use other rules for these weeks too; switch method on any page to compare.

Questions about Manchester prayer times

Why is Isha so late in Manchester in June?

On midsummer nights the sun stays too close to Manchester’s horizon for true nightfall, so Isha follows the Moonsighting Committee’s seasonal limit and begins at 23:00 or later from about 17 to 30 June. Some Manchester mosques use an earlier summer rule, so check yours.

Can I use Manchester prayer times in Liverpool or Sheffield?

Only with a small correction: Liverpool runs about three minutes behind Manchester, and Sheffield two to four minutes ahead. At Maghrib in Ramadan, those few minutes are worth allowing for.

Is my Manchester mosque’s jamaat the same as these times?

No. The times here are when each prayer begins in Manchester; mosques hold the jamaat a little later and set their own Fajr and Isha rules for the summer. For congregation, follow your mosque’s printed timetable.

How much later is the Hanafi Asr in Manchester?

About 28 minutes later than the standard Asr in mid-December, and about an hour and a quarter later in late June. Pick Hanafi on any Manchester Prayer Times page to see it.
